About the Artist & Artwork

Marion Kavanagh Wachtel (1870–1954) was one of the foremost female artists of early California Impressionism, known for her luminous watercolor and oil landscapes. Trained at the Art Institute of Chicago and later influenced by the plein-air tradition in California, Wachtel became celebrated for her ability to capture the shifting light and subtle moods of the Western landscape.
